Why I Love My Body

via

I kind of can't believe I'm writing this. If you've been reading for a long time, you know I've struggled to lose weight and have a positive body image. Also, it feels weird to admit that I love my body. As women, I feel like we're almost trained to hate our bodies, and to say otherwise would make us conceited. But I think we all just need to love our bodies a little bit more!

It all started when I became pregnant with Grayson. At first, I worried that I might gain too much weight (okay, I worried about it pretty much the whole time!). But as the weeks went by and Grayson grew and my body changed, I started feeling differently about my body. I no longer thought of my body as this thing I'm trapped inside, this curse of extra flesh and ripples and folds and any other number of imperfections that may or may not really be there. I started to see my body as this miraculous thing. I started to appreciate just how amazing my body is!

My body was specially designed, not only for me, but to grow my baby as well. The intricacies of it are nothing short of spectacular. My body housed this tiny ball of cells as it grew and developed into a little person! My body fed Grayson and gave him the nutrients he needed to form a skeleton, a nervous system, and each and every finger and toe. The skin on my tummy stretched and expanded as my uterus grew along with Grayson. My legs grew stronger as I supported the weight of my ever-growing belly. And even with its aches and pains as I progressed in my pregnancy, I had a newfound respect for this body of mine.

Then, as if that weren't awesome enough, my body birthed that baby it had spent all that precious time growing! The process of labor is so perfect. I'm surprised anyone can think it's anything short of a meticulously planned design by an all-powerful creator. I think as an American culture, in general, we've really shorted our bodies in the respect and honor they deserve when it comes to labor and delivery. We fear labor and see it as a terrible, painful process that should be dreaded. We work to numb the pain with epidurals and other medications and unnecessary interventions just to make it less scary and "easier." Meanwhile, we're not experiencing the full wonder of what our bodies are doing! When you lay flat on your back and are numb to the pain, I'm sure it's easy to lose sight of just how incredible the process is. But when you're pacing the floors, rocking on exercise balls, and sitting in hot showers while you literally feel your body urging your baby further and further down, and when you're pushing with all your might to give your baby that final push into the world, you can't help but notice how much work your body is doing!

I have never felt stronger in my life than I did after having Grayson naturally. I mean, physically in that moment, I felt exhausted, but I imagine it's similar to completing any other physically taxing challenge. You may feel tired and sore and completely worn out, but you also feel a surge of pride in what you've accomplished.

I spent the next several weeks caring for my frazzled, torn, and swollen body. I was so grateful to my body for giving me Grayson, I began to give myself more grace. It was okay that my belly had loose flesh where a tight, round bump used to be. How could I hate something that did so much for me?

My body didn't stop there. It continued to feed Grayson, and still does, through breastfeeding. For the first 6 months of his life, he did not eat or drink a single thing other than my milk, made from my body. Again, I was able to sustain the life of another with just this body God has given me. Not only was I providing nourishment, but also building his immune system with antibodies. I was his every meal, his multi-vitamin, and his cough syrup...all in one. These breasts that I spent years and years padding or pushing up or squeezing together, all in an attempt to make them appear bigger, were now giving life! Now, at times they're bigger than others, and sometimes they are lop-sided, but I love them still. How could I not? They feed my precious baby!

Now I know, I know, what you're thinking. Sure, it's easy to love your body when you're fitter and thinner than you have been in years. I'm not bragging; it would be naive of me not to admit this in this post. Yes, it's true. It's easier to love my body when I'm at my ideal weight and pleased with how I look. I like to think I would still feel this way even if I still had some stubborn baby weight hanging around or massive stretch marks across my belly, but it's probably easier to love myself in my current state. That said, I don't think I love myself BECAUSE I'm healthier. I think I'm healthier BECAUSE I learned to love myself more.

As my respect for my body grew during pregnancy, so did my efforts to take better care of it. I worked out throughout my entire pregnancy. I paid more attention to what I put in my body. Yes, I still eat ice cream every night (seriously!), but I'm also more intentional about eating lots of healthy foods. I also knew that I would need to be in shape to pull off a natural labor, so I kept myself busy with prenatal yoga, pilates, and other workouts.

Even now, I try to be a healthier version of myself. I limit processed foods and eat more fresh foods. I've traded frozen low-calorie (but high sodium!) lunches for homemade sandwiches with fresh ingredients like grilled chicken, hummus, avocado, tomatoes, spinach, etc (thanks to Scott for making my lunch every day!). :) I limit sodas and other sugary drinks and drink plenty of water instead. And when given the choice, I almost always choose to take the stairs and walk across campus to my destination rather than drive. This has been especially helpful during SOAR season when I'm walking back and forth across campus several times a day!

I also would be remiss if I didn't note that some of my body type and shape is just genetic. Some women have a harder time recovering a healthy body after pregnancy than others. I also breastfeed which burns a ton of calories, helping with the weight issue.

But that is not the point. The point is, my body is awesome because of what it was designed to do! And I LOVE it for that. And because of that love, I want to take better care of it. I just believe that if you truly love yourself first, you're going to feel better about yourself, and have an easier time living a healthier lifestyle. We're reading a book called The Happiness Advantage in my office book club, and the author discusses that many of us strive to get to a certain place in life, whether it be weight, career, family, etc, so that we can be happy. We think, if I can just do this then I'll be happy. But the truth is, those who are already happy and have positive attitudes are the ones who achieve more. Happiness isn't something to earn, you have to find happiness where you are, and then you'll move forward. I think it's true with body image too. You can't work your butt off with exercises and diets so that you can finally love your body. Chances are, your hatred of your body will cause you to grow frustrated and give up. Or, even if you become healthier, you'll probably still find reasons not to be content with your body. You have to love your body first!

My body's ability to grow, deliver, and feed a baby is just one example of the amazing things our bodies can do. There are women who cannot or choose not to have children, and their bodies are no less worthy of love. Same goes for men. Taking a moment to just revel in the intricate design of our bodies to think, move, and pump blood to all our organs is enough to grow reverence and respect.

Take a moment. Just a moment! Think about your body. Think about what it accomplishes on a day to day basis, and maybe what it's capable of that it hasn't yet accomplished (whether that be childbirth or running a marathon or climbing a mountain...). How can you not love it?

Things I'm only just now thinking about...

I know there has been a lot of talk around here about possibly getting pregnant soon. Sorry. But it's about to continue.

These are the things I've thought about this week:
  • I need new work clothes since I'm applying for big girl jobs. Should I spend money on a lot of new clothes if those same clothes may not fit me in a few months?
  • Wine! Holiday dinners without wine?!?! Graduation celebrations without wine?? I know it's very sad that this is even a potential problem. It's not like I'm addicted; I just really like wine!
  • Am I the weight I want to be right now? I know I won't be able to vigorously work out once I get pregnant. Will I get really fat? I'm not worried about a giant baby bump...just a giant everything else. I'm scared I'll use my pregnancy as an excuse to not workout and to eat as much as I want. And I was really hoping I would be a tiny bit thinner before I got pregnant. And my core! I need to workout my core first!! I'm just a tad concerned about all this!
  • I tend to have digestive issues and I have a bladder condition that causes painful spasms. I'm terrified that pregnancy will make these conditions much worse.
  • and the age old concern of will I keep working after I have the baby. You know all about my concerns. But I just won't know until I know. I'm going to continue on until then with pursuing a career and finding something that I love to do. I'll plan to come back to work. And if I have to change my plans later, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, I guess.
  • And what if none of this even matters because what if I have a hard time getting pregnant? Or what if I have a miscarriage? These are scary thoughts that I try not to dwell on. I just have to trust that God is in control and His plan is perfect.
Pretty nursery...I'm obsessed with the gray stripes. Yes, there I go with the gray walls again! :)
What I'm NOT worried about:
  • Being financially ready. Don't get me wrong. We are NOT financially ready. Who is? I'm just over waiting for that to happen! I know God will provide and we are obedient with our money. We'll make it work!
  • Being good parents
  • How this will change my relationship with Scott
And I think those are three very important concerns. I can deal with all the worries and stress of all the other details as they come up. But as long as we are emotionally ready and we know we will stick together and love each other no matter what happens in the process, that is all I really care about.

Hope you all are having a wonderful week and are as ready for Thanksgiving as I am! (And for now, wine is still on the table! ha!)

Weekend Updates

Hello, Friends! Well, it's another Monday. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are feeling refreshed and ready to tackle this week! I could have possibly used more rest, but I feel great about what all we accomplished this weekend, while still having some fun down-time too.

Friday:

+ Had another great workout at the gym--cardio and ab work
+ Started watching reruns of Raising Hope. How did we not know how funny this show is??
+ Sang and played guitar along with my Grooveshark playlists...yes, this is the kind of thing we do for fun. :)

Saturday:

+ Woke up to a tasty breakfast and coffee with pumpkin spice creamer
+ Spent about 3 hours in the back yard pulling weeds and tidying up. Our yard no longer looks like a jungle!
+ Bought a brand new dishwasher and refrigerator from Lowe's. Got it at 20% off, tax-free, and free delivery and haul away! Suh-weet!!
+ Bought a new bed set for our bedroom and transferred our old stuff to the guestroom which did not have a real set on it. But now I think we need new drapes and probably to paint our walls. And no, we are not done hanging things and decorating the new house. I realize how boring these rooms look!

New set

Old set now in guest room. And say hi to Gus! :)
+ Had delicious Ruby Tuesday for dinner. Why do I always fill up on the Garden Bar before my meal even comes? Lucky this just means I have tasty leftovers for dinner tonight! Hello, blackened Tilapia and asparagus!
+ Watched this movie:

Sunday:

+ Played with the sweet babies in the nursery at church
+ Grilled hot dogs for lunch because it was GORGEOUS outside
+ Spent the rest of the day cleaning the house while Scott worked on a project for school (BOO!!)
+ Had a nice Sunday dinner of turkey meatloaf, broccoli, and baked sweet potato
+ Had coffee with pumpkin spice creamer and pumpkin cool whip pie for dessert--delicious!
+ Watched this movie and tried not to cry my eyes out. So good!

And that's it, folks! Pretty eventful and awesome! :) Hope you had a good one, too!

Back to the gym!

Well, I did it! I went to the gym yesterday. This may not seem like a big accomplishment, but I have not legitimately worked out (other than the effort it takes to move heavy boxes and furniture and work in the yard all day long) in THREE months! Yes, three! And I haven't been to the gym in longer than that. Over the summer I did not have a gym membership, but I was still consistently working out with good ol' Jillian Michaels. Even on our two vacations over the summer, I worked out several times.

But once the house drama set in, and then we moved, and then moved again, I basically just stopped doing normal things. Like working out.

And now, my friends, I am happy to say that I had an awesome workout yesterday and I've got my gym bag packed for another one after work today! :) It's all about making the time, even when it feels like there isn't enough. And then not allowing that feeling of no time to zap my motivation. I'm hoping that I keep up the practice until it becomes a habit again. Scott is on board too, which helps. Of course he has been doing at least one workout a week this whole time, but he is ready to get back to 3-4 a week at least.

I'm a little sore today, but I feel ready to conquer another workout, and I feel closer to losing those three pounds before my birthday (which, by the way, is technically five pounds because I gained another one this week! Drat! Well, we'll see how it goes!!)

Happy Friday, and enjoy your weekends!

27 Before 27...turbo speed!

I'm a little late jumping on this band wagon...especially since I will be 27 in less than 3 months! But there is something about the start of a new season (especially fall, which is my favorite season!) that fill me with motivation and positivity and makes me want to set new goals. Since I'm working with a short time frame, these will have to be short, specific goals. And we just bought a house so forgive me but most of these will be house related.

  1. Do a thorough and awesome job decorating for fall, Halloween, and Christmas
  2. Come up with Halloween costumes that might help us place in the contest at The University Store again. We came in 2nd place and won a $50 gift card two years ago with our Rogue and Wolverine costumes. And I think our Harry Potter costumes the year before were pretty sweet too, even though we didn't win anything.
  3. Read three books outside of required reading for school. I know that doesn't sound like much, but I've been pretty darn busy lately! I just started The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Just need two more after I finish that one!
  4. Finish weeding our multiple garden areas in our yard and making our lawn pretty. It's a tough time to do that because things are starting to die and I can't get a good vision of what is actually going to be pretty in the spring. But some things are very clearly weeds or very clearly ugly, so I can start there! We spent 8 hours working outside this past Saturday (and I'm still SO sore!), but there is a lot more to be done.
  5. Organize our personal files. Our old system is not going to cut it as our files continue to grow. We bought a file cabinet at a yard sale a couple weeks ago. Now I just need to buy the hanging folders and start organizing!
  6. Take the time to bake and be more creative with our snacks for small group. Chips and salsa are not that inspired...
  7. Lose three pounds. That's it. If I can do that I'll be a little into the 130's and that will give me some buffer room for holiday food. I need to get serious about that soon because the seasonal goodies are already starting (hello, pumpkin spice latte!)
  8. Complete my portfolio for my Master's program and finish out my last semester! You can then call me Master Curley. I believe that's how that works.
  9. Polish my resume and start applying for jobs! Yikes! I cannot even imagine not being a student. What will I do with my time?? Guess I better start having babies! ;)
  10. Accessorize more. I'm terrible at this. I'm not a big jewelry person. If I do wear it, I prefer small and simple styles. I have never felt comfortable in bulky jewelry. But I think I can at least try to branch out more and be more mindful of the pieces beyond the outfit itself.
  11. Buy some tights and/or leggings and wear them with a dress and some boots, darnit! I love the look but have yet to buy the goods!
  12. Budget for more periodic shopping (maybe 1-2 inexpensive pieces per paycheck so that it's not so financially devastating when I finally have to break down and do a major shopping spree). This will hopefully help me continue to build up my professional wardrobe for when I get that full-time job after graduation! Whoop! :)
  13. Speaking of budget...make a real budget, and stick to it! We sort of have one...in our heads...but I want to actually get it all down in a spreadsheet or something that we can use. After our first round of utility bills come in on our new house we will have a better idea of how to do that.
  14. Pay off our credit cards. Oh, boy! Well, we went on a cruise at the beginning of the summer and put a lot of it on cards thinking we would pay it off by mid-summer....Then we decided to buy a house. And that sort of got put on hold. And added to. So now we're working on paying that off. Hopefully before my birthday so we can use them for Christmas presents if we need to.
  15. Throw more dinner parties and hang out with people more often. We own a house in town now, so there is no excuse not to spend more time with our friends. I would say we are off to a great start. We've started hosting small group at our house every-other week, we've had 1 set of friends over for dinner, we've had Scott's aunt and uncle over, this weekend my mom and her husband are coming, and next weekend Scott's parents and sister are coming! Are we over doing it? ha!
  16. Meet some neighbors!
  17. Go to First Friday in downtown Statesboro and walk around, get cupcakes, and be social!
  18. Blog at least once a week....can I really do it? :/
  19. Call my great-grandma just to chat
  20. Visit my nieces
  21. Sit outside more. We have such beautiful landscaping and the weather is cooling down...why shouldn't we sit outside and enjoy it?
  22. Serve my husband more faithfully and cheerfully. I admit I have gotten a little lazy at home since I've been so busy with work and school. He has been my source of motivation to do anything productive at home. I want to be better about coming home and doing nice things for him and being willing and determined to do things around the house without his prompting.
  23. Find a good devotional or study book to supplement my Bible study time. Sometimes I allow myself to get into a rut with my routines and then my time with the Lord doesn't feel as genuine or personal as it could. Mixing it up with new material is one way to get me connected on a deeper level. I also want to make sure I'm praying more often throughout the day, even when I'm very busy!
  24.  Earnestly pray about how I'm serving in the church and listen and obey what God is calling me to do.
  25. Paint the fireplace mantel in our living room (and maybe the beam across our vaulted ceiling...)
  26. Take more baths (not to be confused with showers...yes, I bathe regularly!) and give myself more pedicures. Turns out even though I'm not a huge fan of water or feet...those things truly are relaxing. :)
  27. Pack more nutritious lunches than frozen meals. Sure they are convenient and low in calories, but I think my body would appreciate some variety...preferably including food that is easier to digest and not loaded with preservatives and sodium, please!
Whew! That was actually really hard to come up with 27 things! Sorry most of these are so simple and things that, let's face it, I was probably going to do anyway. But it's fun to write things down, and there are very few things in this life that I find more satisfying than checking things off a list!!

Happy Monday!
~Christy

Things to Come...

A lot has happened and a lot is coming!

--> I gave up baked goods for the month of April, as a personal challenge. I was shocked how often I had to turn them down. I didn't realize they were offered to me so often! I did well with this challenge, and it even got to the point where I didn't feel as tempted each time. BUT I did not make it the entire month. On the 25th, 5 days before the end of the month, I had an AMAZING piece of chocolate cheesecake. I was at a luncheon for Administrative Professionals Day and they served it to us, right there in front of me, already sliced and on a plate, ready to eat. I suppose I could have turned it down. But I did not. So, I didn't make it the whole month, but pretty darn close! And now that it's May, I'm ready to enjoy some goodies! haha! First up? I'm trying out Diet Coke brownies!! Hey, at least they're low cal!

via Eat Yourself Skinny
--> I went to an airshow in Warner Robins with my husband, my best friend, and her awesome little boy Leland. We saw the Blue Angels! :) It was a really great show and we had a lot of fun. Too bad the day felt ruined by the time we finally got off base. It was a madhouse trying to catch a shuttle bus, waiting 1.5 hours in 100 degree weather, while buses kept passing our line by. It was awful. People were passing out around us from heat stroke. No kidding. And we had a 1-year old with us. It was a little stressful, to say the least. But we made it home safely with only a little sunburn, so I would still call it a successful day!

--> We booked our cruise! We're heading to The Bahamas in 4 weeks! :) Scott's family also booked a beach house on St. George Island for a week in July. So we officially have 2 vacations planned for the summer. Can't wait!! Here are a couple pictures from the cruise last time we went, and from St. George.

--> We have attempted to kill the fleas in our house!! And we are certainly working under the good ol' saying, if at first you don't succeed, try and try again! We have been trying LOTS of different things. I'm sorry to say we still have them, but it's getting much better. Hopefully we can kill these vicious pests for good soon!

--> My niece is turning 3 next week! I can hardly believe it! And her precious little sister just turned 1. We are going up to visit them this Saturday. I'm so excited to spend the whole day with these little angels! :)

Other than all that exciting news, school is wrapping up for the semester. I just have one exam and one paper left to do. My internship will be over May 18th. I'll probably cry. I have loved working there so much, and I hate to leave. Hopefully I will remain close with all the people in the office and maybe one day I'll be back as a paid employee! You never know! I'm looking very much forward to the summer, though. I can't wait to only work 20 hours a week...have more time to do homework during the day instead of nights and weekends, and hopefully laying by the pool! :)

What are you looking forward to?

What's new with my weight? Glad you asked!

I know it's been a while since I've blogged about my weight. This time last year it was practically all I was writing about. I lost 10 pounds last year in only 2 months, and I was hoping to just keep dropping weight like a mad woman and be super slim by Christmas. Yeah...that didn't happen! I fluctuated around for the remainder of the year, and by New Years, I was within 4 pounds of my original weight.

Thankfully, I started eating better and working out as soon as I got back home from the holidays and dropped the extra weight within only a couple weeks. But even so, I was about 152.

My best friend Hayley & I decided to keep an accountability chart, keeping track of our workouts, meals, and weight loss. I was doing this back in September in my own personal "food journal," but I quickly stopped keeping up with that. Now that I share the information with someone, I feel much more accountable for what I do and eat. We are on our 3rd month of doing this. We've both managed to lose some weight. I've lost about 6 or 7 pounds total, which is really not a lot in 2 months time. There has been some fluctuation from week to week. Mostly because of special events like birthdays and weddings (speaking of, I have a wedding this weekend!) which offer tempting, fattening food. But the good news is, neither of us have given up. Which is more than I can say about myself last year. By this time last year, I had decided to take a break before going for another 10 pound loss. And I never really picked it back up. But I feel like Hayley & I are both pretty devoted, and will be sticking this thing out!

My current weight is 146! I haven't weighed less than 150 in at least 3 years, maybe more. Growing up I was always thin, generally weighing around 115-120...though there was one year in high school I got up to 140! But I managed to lose 20 pounds in 1 summer. Don't know how I did that craziness! Apparently back then all it took was some light jogging and eating less Pringles! Now I feel like it's a constant battle.

But I feel amazing! My clothes all sag and hang off of me. And while it's not always the most attractive look, I still feel really good about myself. My clothes are not all very flattering, but I know it's because they're too big. And that feeling is 1,000 times better than the opposite--having unflattering clothes b/c they're too small. And I've been there SO many times. I'm actually relishing the fact that I can pull down every single pair of pants I own without even unbuttoning them! ha! One day I'll buy some new ones. Part of me is scared to do it in case I gain the weight back. Granted, I could just keep the old ones. Also I want to wait until I feel more like I'm plateauing so that I don't have to turn around and buy MORE in just a couple months. I just bought all my work pants in December...and now they're all too big. I don't really want to spend the money on new pants so soon after buying these. And I suppose I could get them altered, but I've never done that. Have y'all? Is the process fairly easy and inexpensive?? Or should I just suck it up and buy new pants?

Anyway, that's what up with me and my weight! Hopefully tomorrow I will see that I've lost even more! :)

Christmas 2010...probably weighing around 164ish

New Years 2012...probably around 155
This is crazy for a blogger to say...but I don't have any recent pictures of me!!
But I look thinner than the picture above now!
I will have to take a picture soon! :)

My Husbandless Saturday

Well, Scott left for Atlanta straight from work last night. I know I talk a big game, about how excited I am for the me time and all that, but when it comes time to say goodbye, all that goes out the window. There may have been some teary eyes...yes, I realize we'll literally only go one day without seeing each other. It's pathetic adorable. And as I headed home, I realized how much more fun the night could be if he were with me. It's like Jack Johnson says, "it's better when we're together."

This is us a few days after Christmas. We visited my mom in Florida and went to the beach.
And nothing says Christmas like a snowman...I mean, sandman!

Nonetheless, I tried to make the most of it. I bought some sushi, as planned, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I watched The Addams Family movie, which I had recorded on TiVo several weeks ago but secretly knew Scott would never want to watch. (He never watched ANY of the old TV shows growing up. He was seriously deprived. That means he doesn't care about Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Addams Family, The Munsters, Brady Bunch, Green Acres, Gilligans Island...can you believe he's NEVER seen an episode of Gilligan's Island????) Anyway, I digress.

I watched several episodes of Big Bang Theory and then headed to bed around 10:45. I read for about half an hour in bed and then went to sleep, thinking how cold his side of the bed felt (especially compared to my toasty side with the heated mattress pad!). I originally woke up around 6:30 this morning but knew I couldn't allow myself to get up at that awful time. So, I forced myself to go back to sleep (okay, it wasn't that hard to do!), and I managed to sleep until 9:30. Yeah, that's like 10 hours of sleep. Too much?

Now I've had a tasty breakfast and I'm ready to take on the day. I've already made a list of things I want to accomplish. Most of it is not that fun...like dusting the house and cleaning my makeup brushes and doing homework. But I have some fun things on the list, like dancing around my bedroom using a hair brush as a microphone (even though we have actual microphones in the house). Hey, we're never too old for that!

Oh, PS--out of pure stubbornness I decided to weigh myself again this morning. And I lost 1.8 pounds! Of course the Wii Fit reminded me that last time I weighed it was 6:45 AM and that our bodies fluctuate up to 2 pounds throughout the day so it might not be accurate. Whatever. I saw a number that made me happier and that's that! :)

Happy Saturday to all of you! Do something inspiring today! :)

Don't you dare say it's just muscle!

I have been trying to lose weight. For the past month my best friend and I have been keeping up with an accountability chart in Google docs where we track everything we eat and all the exercising we do. (Yes, I know there are apps and social networks out there for this sort of thing, but I like the way we do it!) I have been working my butt off. But not literally. Not literally at all.

The first week I lost 1.7 pounds. Then I lost 4.4, which was very exciting. But for the past 2 weeks I have steadily been gaining 1-2 pounds a week! It's SO frustrating!! I admit, I have to take some of the blame on this. I have made some bad choices with my diet. But not very many, and my workouts have been really intense. It doesn't seem fair that one piece of cake or a brownie should set me back when the rest of the week I eat good food and workout like crazy. So, I'm feeling a little...bleh...today.

And what's really frustrating is how much I set my self-worth on a number on the scale. I woke up this morning feeling really good (very sore, but good!). I thought I looked thinner. I feel healthier. I was expecting to have lost at least 2 pounds. And when I saw that I had, in fact, gained a pound, I was so disappointed. It was shocking. Totally not what I expected. I wish I could get back that feeling I had when I woke up. But ever since seeing that stupid number on the scale, I've felt lousy.

Do any of you battle with a number? Why does it even matter if we are being healthy? But it does. It just does.

Here's to hoping for a more positive weekend from here on out!

Feelin' Good!

Ready for some good news?

*I lost 4.4 pounds last week! Yes, I'm trying to get back on that losing weight and being healthy wagon! I took a little hiatus for the months of November & December, and boy did I pay for it! But I've been doing much better this month. My best friend Hayley and I have created a Google Doc spreadsheet to keep track of what we eat each day and how much we exercise. It's a great way to hold each other accountable, and it really is helping me. I have actually mustered up the motivation to work out, and the self-control to turn down a cookie, just because I knew I would have to write it all down. And not just write it down, but have someone else look at it. I highly suggest it, as long as you trust yourself not to cheat!!

*Scott is still trying to sell his motorcycle to help pay for the down payment on whatever house we end up buying. As a sort of last resort, we took it to the dealer on Saturday just to see what they would offer, assuming it would be highway robbery. We were pleased to find out that they would buy it for a decent amount, OR would sell it for us and only take 10% for themselves. So, hopefully they have some luck selling it. If not, we know we can get a fair amount from them for it. One step closer to a house!

*I had an awesome weekend hanging out with some good friends, enjoying a balance of rest and productivity, and leading worship at church for the kids. I don't know if I've mentioned this yet, but Scott & I now lead worship for the 1st through 5th graders at church. I sing and he plays guitar and sings. We also have a friend on the drums, and another friend who does hand motions for the kids to follow along and get excited. This week I felt like was especially good. We had about 3 kids up at the front of the room jumping up and down in excitement. It's so awesome to serve God in this way and see kids get amped up about worship!

*I recently discovered how much I love The Big Bang Theory. Hey, that's good news, right? :)

PS--Sorry there are no pictures. I decided to stop pressuring myself to have a picture for every post, meaning I was carrying my camera around at all times, trying to capture the moments instead of just enjoying them. I know it's less exciting for y'all, but I think the living part is still more important than the sharing part. Hope you can forgive. :)

Happy Monday!

A Lesson on Self-Control & Donuts

I'm sure this will be the most profound blog you read today. I mean...it has to be when it's about donuts, right?

Last year I finished Christmas break weighing about 162 pounds. I resolved to lose 10 pounds in 2 months. And...I did it! Well, actually I was about 1.5 pounds off, but I lost that the following week. But for the rest of the year I sort of fluctuated 3-5 pounds here and there. Finally, I got down to 150 and seemed to rest there for a couple months. Then Christmas hit again! I decided I wasn't going to worry about my weight because I didn't want to miss out on the traditional Christmas foods. So, I shamelessly ate casseroles and stuffing and drank lots of wine! This week was my first week back at home as well as my first week working out in about 2-3 months! Yikes! And I resumed my weekly Friday morning weigh-in. I was horrified to find I had gained close to 5 pounds in just 2 weeks! And I had gained a couple pounds just before the break as well. Now I weigh 156 and the little line on my Wii Fit is hanging out just below the "overweight" line. Grrr!

I realized that much of this boils down to a lack of self-control. I'm perfectly fine with not eating out a lot and not keeping unhealthy food in my house. But as soon as someone offers me something delicious but deadly, I just can't seem to help myself! When I go to parties and social gatherings, I gorge myself on food. I'm that girl who stands by the food table and just talks to whoever happens to come by there. And if I have a good "excuse" like the holidays, it's all over.

This morning, after my weigh-in and during my prayer time, I started talking to God about my lack of self-control. I shared my frustration and helplessness. And then I realized, self-control is a Fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23) Meaning that since I am a Christian, and Christ lives in me, this fruit is grown in me by God. And it is freely given. Which means that I DO have self-control. I'm just choosing not to use it. I'm acting out of a selfish desire for instant gratification and pleasure. I'm putting my desire for something tasty right now ahead of my desire to live a long and healthy life, to look good and feel good about myself, and to glorify God by caring for the body He has given me.

As I was praying through this, I actually said to God, "I just hope no one brings donuts to work anytime soon!"

And guess what I found at work today? .......

DONUTS!! (Though they were plain glazed)

One of my co-workers brought them in for everyone and was so excited to share them with us. She actually said, "I was driving to work today and felt compelled by The Spirit to stop for donuts for everyone." (She's a very spiritual person.) Wow. Thanks for that curve ball, God! {No, I can't say for sure this was a test from God, but either way I believe He used this instance to speak to me about my self-control issues.}

Many people tried to convince me to eat one. My coworker even went so far as to put one on a plate and hand it to me! And you have to know, donuts are a particular weakness of mine (along with cake, cookies, ice cream, brownies, banana pudding, french silk pie...you get the idea!). They smelled SO good! I could almost taste the sugar wafting through the air. And I could tell they were still warm and fresh.

I reluctantly put the doughnut back in it's box and walked away. I came back later and literally stood over the donuts, contemplating whether I should have one or not. A couple people came in with various reasons why it was okay "it's the weekend!" "you can just work it off later!" "You deserve it!" Painfully, I still walked away. And I'm happy to report that I did NOT have a doughnut today! :)

As crazy as this sounds, I really did have to lean on God for this one. I know, this is making me sound like a lunatic fat woman. I'm not obese in any way...but I know I can be healthier and thinner than I am now. All my immediate family members are bone thin. Growing up I was always thin. And Wii Fit tells me my ideal weight is 140. So I should at least be able to do THAT. But it's hard. Sometimes I feel like it's harder for me than others who I know have lost weight or are naturally thin. I crave more, I love food more. Maybe not, but that's how I feel.

And it scares me sometimes that I can't seem to control it. I worry about when I get pregnant. I worry that I will feel it gives me license to eat and I will become obese and never lose the weight. And today God showed me that if I just use the self-control that He is working to grow in me, I can lose weight and make smart choices.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not swearing off sweets entirely. And I will certainly have donuts again in my life. But it's good to know that if I just turn to God to control my urges, I can say no. Even to donuts!

Happy Friday, everyone! Enjoy your weekend and eat some sweets for me!!! ;)

Not Bad, 2011. Not bad at all!

2011 was a great year. It definitely had it's ups and downs and bumps in the road. There was no shortage of family drama, as usual, and there have been some deaths and tragedies along the way as well. But overall, I would say God blessed me abundantly in 2011. Last year I made a list (a LONG list) of resolutions. So, I'll go through those to see which ones I actually did. But before that...other things I'm proud of/loved about 2011:

  • Losing 10 pounds in 2 months (now if only I can do that again!)

  • Getting all A's and surviving Practicum
  • Landing my dream internship for this semester in the First Year Experience office at Georgia Southern University.
  • Disney World!

  • seeing more of my sister

  • Finding more ways to serve and be involved in our church
  • seeing my best friend Hayley and her sweet baby more often

  • growing closer to God and closer to my husband (who even knew we could be closer??) :)
Okay, here's the list from last year. I've put in italics whether or not I met them.

1. Eat more veggies! –I would say, yes. But I could still do better.
2. drink more water. –I’m not sure why I even did this one. Water is basically all I drink!
3. search for more alternative recipes for some of our favorite dishes (ie, whole wheat pasta and breads, fat free sour cream, egg substitute, etc...) – definitely yes! I’ve found what I like and what isn’t worth messing with. Still always up for a new, healthy recipe though!
4. find more ways to be physical throughout the day (walk around every 30 minutes at work, lift weights while watching TV, always take the stairs vs. the elevator, etc...) –eh…more or less. Mostly less…
5. do more physical activities for fun, like riding bikes, taking walks, dancing, etc... –I’ve done some fun and physical things, but not as much as I should.
6. spend more time outside. –Yes, I feel like I’ve definitely done that. Though I do tend to hide in the AC during the deathly heat of summer.
7. visit family more often. –yes. There are always more people that I wish I could see more often, but I think I’ve done a pretty good job seeing as many people as possible.
8. hang out with friends more often. –definitely yes! When we have a free weekend, we usually fill it with friends!
9. Spend more time with God. –Absolutely! I get up 30 minutes early every day to read the Bible, pray, and journal. Of course I can always spend MORE time with God, and my time could be more meaningful. But I’m pleased that I’ve kept this up for almost a whole year and have no intentions of stopping.
10. Continue paying off my student loans each month, even though I don't have to since I'm still in school. –within reason. Some months it just isn’t possible. But I did make a few payments.
11. Find ways to give more, whether it be with money, time, possessions, etc... –this is another one that could always be better, but I’m pleased that we are giving more than 10% each month and finding ways to serve regularly for the Kingdom.
12. Read more books! –definitely, yes! I feel like I read a lot last year! Really good stuff, too! Hunger Games, The Help, Water for Elephants, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Lipstick in Afghanistan, Jane Eyre, etc…
13. Do at least one project around the house a month. –I started out strong on this one, but fell behind about halfway through the year. But I think our house looks really nice and we’ve made a lot of improvements.
14. Make all A's each semester –done!
15. and lastly--write more. –no, definitely not. Maybe one day…

And here are some plans for 2012!
I'm not making a long list of resolutions this year,
but just a few things that I hope to see happen. :)

  • Continue to get all A's, survive both sets of internships, and GRADUATE in December!
  • Blog more!!! (I can dream, huh?)
  •  Lose 10 pounds, per usual!
  • Buy a house!!!!
  • Put a baby in my belly! :) We're hoping to get pregnant towards the end of the year so that I'll be done with school before having the baby.
  • Spend even more, genuine, time with God and learn to love Him and others even more!
I have a lot of recapping to do from the holidays! I realize I'm doing things a little out of order. But here's a teaser for what's to come (or for what already happened...however you want to look at it!)

More randomness

*I feel like I'm the only person working today. Although I suppose I should count my blessings that I get all next week off.
*I hate Christmas cards with glitter on them. As much as I love the thought, they drive me crazy! On the other hand, I suppose it's the gift that keeps on giving. Scrub as you may, that glitter ain't coming off your hands, clothes, and face for a least a month!

* My Christmas plans consist of: driving to Atlanta tonight to stay with Scott's parents. Tomorrow--going w/ Scott's mom to get my hair cut and colored (an early Christmas present). Saturday--We're celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve with Scott's family. Waking up early to open presents, making monkey bread, drinking hot chocolate and maybe some Baileys, etc... Sunday--Going to my grandparents' for lunch, where we will also see my dad, then to my great-grandma's for dinner. Then I'm not entirely sure where we'll be staying that night. Probably back at Scott's parents' again. Monday--picking up my sister and driving down to Tampa to stay with my mom until the day before NYE. New Years Eve--partying it up in Orlando with Scott's sister and her husband, as well as her friend from out of town who we all love! Yes, we will be BUSY! But not as bad as previous years when we also drove down to South Florida to see 3 sets of grandparents.

*We were going to use Christmas money to buy a fancy camera like all you super bloggers use. Then I realized those suckers are like hundreds and HUNDREDS of dollars! You are out of your minds! (But if I had the money I would TOTALLY join you!) So, since we don't have enough for that, we'll hopefully have enough to buy a new TV. We figured it's time to join the rest of the world and get a flat screen, plasma type situation. And hopefully we can also plug our computer into it so our Hulu times can be seen in all the big screen glory. PS--without the fancy camera, I realize I'm still way out of touch with the rest of blog-land. I guess people will have to just read my blog for content alone. Boring, I know.

*A question for my Christian readers with children-- how do you handle the Santa situation? Do you let your kids believe in him? Do you take your kids to see him in the mall? I'm still really torn on the issue. I don't think Santa is "bad" or anything, and I have no problem with kids believing in him. But I want to make sure they know what Christmas is really about, and don't get caught up in all the Santa business. I don't know. What are your thoughts? What does Christmas look like for your family? How do you keep Christ in it for the children?

*I can't wait to share with you some of the homemade gifts I made this year. But I can't do it now. Some of the intended recipients read this blog. And you will just have to wait, intended recipients! And so will the rest of you. I realize it would be helpful to share ahead of time so you can do it too. But let's just say...Pinterest is my friend. :)

*My weight has been fluctuating like crazy lately. Probably because I keep eating junk. Nothing but junk. And I take stomach medicine almost daily b/c of it. Yesterday I gorged on chocolate covered pretzels and cookies until I felt ill. When I finally recovered that night, I had hot chocolate and monkey bread. And then I was ill again. Fool! But I've resolved that there is no sense in worrying about weight during Christmas. I will just drive myself crazy or feel guilty for enjoying the treats that are so much a part of the season. I have no intentions of passing up on desserts and homemade candies. That's part of the joy of Christmas. (Well, that and Jesus, of course!) So, I'll worry about it after New Years. You know, I'll make a resolution like the rest of the world. :)

*I may be MIA for the next week or so. But what else is new? I'm sure the rest of you will be too busy with your own Christmas plans to keep up with reading blogs anyway.

Love you all! And MERRY CHRISTMAS! :)

Good Stuff

After yesterday's really sad post, I feel the need to write a post about happy things. Because there are still happy things, and for that I am thankful.

  • I'm happy that this weekend I get to see my besties and celebrate with one of them as she prepares to move to The Netherlands to marry the love of her life.
  • I'm happy that my house smells like autumn (via Bath & Body Works wallflowers. Currently enjoying Spiced Cinnamon Pumpkin & Autumn)...even if the weather outside has reverted back to gross heat.
  • I'm happy that I got new glasses that I really like and actually think look good on me!

  • Remember how a couple days ago I said I stopped weighing myself b/c I kept gaining weight? Well, I weighed myself today and in the past 2 weeks I've lost 5 pounds!!! Oh yeah! :) I'm not really sure why b/c I don't think I've worked out at all in that time! I have been trying to eat better, but I'm certainly not eating perfect. I think a lot of it is just how my body weight fluctuates throughout my cycle. BUT it still makes me happy, nonetheless! :)
I don't know how much different I look. But I felt thinner that day.
I'm back down to 151 pounds.
This is about how much I weighed after my last 10 pound loss back in April.
So now all that work hasn't been deminished, thankfully. And it's time to keep going!
  • I'm happy about new shoes. I got 2 new pair from Rack Room a couple weeks ago, and I got a new pair from a local consignment shop today. These are the only ones I have a picture of:

  • I'm happy that my kitties are finally starting to get along a little better, and will both snuggle with me at the same time. (Forgive the unattractive sleeping picture!)

  • I'm happy that my counseling sessions are going well so far, and I actually feel like I'm benefiting people, not just meeting school requirements.
  • I'm happy that this is my 102nd blog post! I realized while writing the sad post that the one before was my 100th! If I had realized it ahead of time I would have made it a little more special. Oh, well!
  • And I'm happy that YOU are reading my blog! :) I'm excited that I have gained several new followers in the past month or so. I'm still miles behind most of you in that area, but I just have to remind myself that this blog is not about getting followers, it's about my life and my walk with God. Any who wish to share in that are more than welcome. But even still, I'm super thankful that you are willing to share in it! :)

Happy Friday, Bloggers! What are YOU happy about today?

The Speedy Updates!!!

I have a counseling session in half an hour. Time for a super speedy post!!

  • I went to a women's conference this past Saturday and had a really great time. There were over 20 salvations! Praise, God!
  • Prayers, please, for my neighbor/landlord. He recently had his leg amputated and has now been informed that he has an infection in the remaining part of his leg. This is really bad news b/c he has an artificial hip that goes down the length of his thigh. They pretty much cannot remove anymore leg. Not sure what will be done.
  • Super excited about this weekend! One of my besties is moving to Holland (I know, right?), and she is having her going away party and bridal shower this weekend (oh yeah, she's moving b/c she's marrying a Dutchman! True story.) I'll be spending the weekend with her, celebrating/mourning, and playing sexy games at her shower! :)
  • God has totally provided me with all my clients for my Practicum hours! I have 4 clients, and a meeting lined up with a high school counselor about getting my required "child" client. Boom! Done. Thank you, Jesus!
  • I got new glasses but, foolish me, have not uploaded pictures yet. They are on my camera. At home. I'm at work now. Boo! I'll get them up soon!!
  • I haven't been weighing myself b/c it's too depressing. No matter what I do, I seem to continue gaining weight. At the risk of my dad lecturing me again, I will admit that I ate half a donut today. Hmm...wonder why this weight-loss thing isn't working... ? On the other hand, I swear I look slimmer this week!
  • Prayers for me as I'm learning how to be a counselor and how to listen to the hard issues of real life people and not let it get me down after the session is over. The cool thing, though, is that I can pray for them after the session is over.
  • Umm...I think that's it!
Happy Tuesday, bloggie friends! :)

PS--I really want to meet bloggers! I realize it's my own fault that I'm not dedicated enough to my blog to make it fancy, to attract new followers, to make it easy for other to share my blog... But I'm super jealous of all these blates I'm reading about, people!

Every Good Blogger Carries a Camera

We all know that every good blogger carries a camera. Ideally, a really nice camera. And they all have an eye for angles. At least, this seems to be the norm. Anyway, I broke the rule. I don't have a nice camera, or a great eye for that matter, but I do like to document things with pictures. But last weekend I didn't carry my camera with me. And for that, I am sorry. There could have been some great shots!

Friday we left straight from work to head down to Savannah to have dinner with Scott's aunt and uncle. His uncle is a pilot and he comes to Savannah at least twice a year for training. Whenever he's in town, he takes us out to dinner. Upon arrival at his hotel, he invited us up to their room where they had prepared a platter of fancy cheese and crackers and some wine. That's how they are. They always have fancy food and wine, even when they travel! It's fabulous. So, after snacking and catching up, we planned our evening. The funny thing is, Scott & I live a little over an hour away from Savannah, and have for the last several years, but his uncle knows the area way better than we do. Every time we meet him down there, he shows us new areas and shares the rich history of the city with us. It never ceases to amaze me. We take Savannah for granted. I often think of it only as the nearest decent shopping mall, and historic River Street which I've seen so many times I'm sick of it. But there is so much more to Savannah than that.

We decided to take a walk and go to Forsyth Park and visit The Mansion, which is a restaurant, hotel, and art gallery. The walk was about 3.5 miles total (there and back), which was more than I anticipated. By the end of it I was a tad grumpy. But perhaps that's because on our way back some residual Irene rain came our way and I walked about a mile in dress pants and flip-flops (it would have been heels if his aunt didn't loan me a pair of sandals). I digress. The walk there was actually really awesome. Savannah is such a beautiful place! If I had a camera, I could have captured so many amazing sites and details.

I had never even heard of The Mansion before, and I certainly would never have stepped inside it if it weren't for Scott's uncle. I would just assume I wasn't fancy enough to go in. But they confidently walked right in and informed the front desk that we just wanted to take a look around. It was BEAUTIFUL!

That's the outside, and it doesn't even do it justice.
Via
Each room had a different theme and decorations. Everything was very modern and classy. Made me want to order a Martini...even though I don't like them!

Then, after our hike through the rain, we had dinner at The Pirate's House. I had never been. I thought it was going to be a cheesy, tourist trap. It was, in a way, but it is really cool because it's historic. There are actually tunnels running under the restaurant where Pirates and seamen used to travel. Just like most things in Savannah, it is old and beautiful. Plus, the food is delish!

Saturday and Sunday were days of major rest. I admit it, I was a complete bum. Aside from a few small school assignments, some light cleaning, and working with Children's Church on Sunday, I basically slept and watched 90210. Yes, the addiction continues...

In other news, I weighed-in on Friday and I lost 2.5 pounds since the previous Saturday! That was an exciting way to kick off my new fitness goals. I've done 4 days of 30 Day Shred. Man, that workout is killer! I got cocky and moved up to Level 2 yesterday...bad decision! Some of those exercises I just could not do. Even the modified versions were challenging. And today I'm paying for it with a sore neck and shoulders...I guess I was straining through some of the moves. But I've been diligent about it. I didn't work out on Friday since we were so busy, and I probably won't get to today or tomorrow because I work and then have class all day, but I'm trying to workout all the other days of the week! Hopefully I will start to see a difference soon. I also took my measurements so we'll see how that improves. I probably won't take them again for another couple weeks at least.

Now I'm just trying to get through this week so I can move on to next weekend! Gotta love a long weekend! And we have a lot of fun things planned, including Celebrate Freedom Atlanta Christian Festival and a Braves game! :)

Have a great week!

Back on Track

Remember how I was trying to lose weight? How I wanted to lose 10 pounds in 2 months, I did that, and then I wanted to do it again? Well, as you've probably guessed since I stopped blogging about it, I never did lose 10 more pounds. I never did lose another pound at all. In fact, I've gained some of those original 10 pounds back. :(

Well, I'm ready to get back on track! I don't want all that hard work to just disappear! According to Wii Fit, my ideal weight is around 140 pounds. I currently weigh about 154. At the start of the year I weighed 162. I don't know if I necessarily want to set a weight-loss goal. I want to be healthier all around, and I mostly just want to look better. I'm not as concerned with the number on the scale, as I am the size of my clothes, and how I feel wearing them. And I how I feel not wearing them.

I always say my butt is the first grow and last to go. And it is true! My midsection is what needs the most work. But I also want to tone my arms a bit. And when I lose weight, my face looks slimmer, which I like. I have had big cheeks since I was born. So...I guess maybe both sets of cheeks are first to grow last to go? haha!

I'm not big on dieting or cutting out all the foods I love. Because I know I'm not going to stick to that. It's a recipe for disaster. So, instead I want to continue trying healthier options for snacks and meals. I'm not going to make super low calorie cookies that taste like beans (b/c they're made from beans...). If I want a cookie, I'll have one. Fat, calories, sugar and all. But I'm trying to incorporate more healthy options into my diet. I bought a pack of cottage cheese with pineapples and it was delish. I've been eating lots of spinach salads, which I make tasty by adding cut up strawberries or oranges. So, more stuff like that. I don't expect to lose a ton of weight without making really big changes and sacrifices, but at some point enjoying my food is actually more important to me than losing weight. I have to consider that when I set goals.

I've also started writing down what I eat each day in my Fitness Journal. I'm not counting calories or anything, but there's something about that accountability of having to write down what I eat that really seems to work for me. I'm not even sharing it with anyone, but I have actually made some choices this week to not eat something unhealthy because "I don't want to have to write that down." Also, if I struggle to lose weight, I can look back through my diet and see what might be the cause. It can help me realize what the real problems might be.

I'm also writing down any exercises and workouts I do during each day. In a similar way, I feel motivated to do more so that I can have the satisfaction of writing it down. Silly, I know. But hey, it seems to work! My gym membership expired this week, and I can't afford to renew just yet. I might be able to in the next few weeks or so. Until then, I'm trying to do as much as I can at home. It's challenging because I live out in the country where there isn't anywhere to walk or ride a bike or anything outside. Plus, it's way too hot to be out there. So, I have to find things to do in my house. Not only that I can do, but things I know I will do. There are plenty of exercises that can be done on any floor space, but I'm not disciplined enough to actually do them.

I've been using my Wii Fit and playing Just Dance 2 more often. I also just got Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred in the mail. Thanks, Alycia for recommending it!! I plan to start it today. I'm a little scared, but I'm also excited. I know I won't do it every day for 30 days. I just won't. Some days I need to rest. Some weekends I travel and it isn't realistic. And every Tues & Weds I leave for work at 7:30 AM and don't get home from class until 8 PM. Then I eat dinner with my husband and have time for maybe one TV show and then we head to bed. (yes, we get ready for bed at like 9) So, I'm not going to work out on those two days. I just don't have time. But I plan to do it for 30 days total. We'll see how it goes!

Wish me luck! I plan to weigh in on Fridays, like I used to. So, I'll keep y'all updated. I think I will also take my measurements because that can often be more accurate than weight anyway, especially if I'm building a lot of muscle.

Thanks for the support!
~Christy~
